This immersive installation invited people to experience what it is like to be inside the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team garage before a race, all through the power of sound. Entering the experience, attendees were greeted with a cacophony of garage noise. By switching the noise cancelling to active on the Bose headphones they wore, the noise was silenced. A binaural briefing from the drivers followed, encouraging attendees to explore the space and discover engineer’s and driver’s conversations, team mechanics working, press interviews and broadcast build up – all triggered by the attendees position. As audio was discovered, particle animation was projected to illustrate what was heard, painting the environment with light over time. As the clock reached zero all was set for the race and to the surprise of the attendee, the car appeared to drive out of the garage with a thumping roar with additional sonic bass from a concealed infra subwoofer. The core of the experience was also presented online via a video, scored with a binaural soundtrack. To create the animation depth captures were shot in the garage that we converted into point cloud animations to give a visual sense of travelling through the sound of the garage.
